Judi Brewer – ‘This has been my dream since I was a young girl’

SHARE

Judi Brewer has been making chocolates since she was a little girl – just to enjoy with her family, or to give away as gifts during the holidays.

Today, she makes her own line of gourmet chocolates through her year-old bakery, Martha Moon Chocolate Co. Some of the tasty confections include white chocolate with toasted organic coconut, dark and milk chocolate filled with organic peanut butter, lemon or mint cre?me, and classic nonpareils.

Fun as it is to eat, chocolate making is hard work, she says – but it’s also exciting and rewarding, particularly when the time comes to experiment and tinker (and, of course, taste).

Q

What were your most important needs in getting started with your business?

A

Help with the process of getting established in the state and the city. Also, buying the equipment that I would need to produce my chocolates. The inspection was also a point of concern – I did not know what to expect, but the guidance I received from my inspector was very helpful. And the owner of the North Dam Mill was also a great help in renovating to meet the requirements.

Q

What factors from your upbringing gave you the courage to venture out on your own?

A

My family has always been very supportive in everything. They encouraged me when I decided to leave a good-paying job to fulfill my dream of going to culinary school, and again when I decided one day that I was going to start my business.

Q

What do you think are the advantages of being a female entrepreneur?

A

I am not sure if there are any advantages to being an entrepreneur just because I am a woman, as there are resources for all.

Q

What advice would you give an aspiring woman entrepreneur?

A

Stay true to what your dream is. You will receive many suggestions and advice, and I would listen to everything anyone is willing to share with you – but this is your dream and you have to do what is right in your heart. And don’t let anyone tell you you can’t.

Q

If you knew then what you know now, would you have done anything differently?

A

I would have saved more and began collecting pieces that I needed to start the business. I literally decided one day to start: I ordered boxes and ingredients and just started. This has been my dream since I was a young girl and I could have prepared just a little better. But everything is working out so the lack of planning didn’t hurt me to badly.
